I know that the debian packages are very bad, but because of this problem, another DD takes them over, and builds new ones very soon. If you wait until these packages are in unstable, I'll backport them for stable, and you could use debian packages, which is much better than selfcompiled software. What do you think?
Icecast2 is a small binary + config script. It's also currently unreleased, changing fairly rapidly. It's quick and easy to compile, as long as you have the dependencies (listed on icecast.org) - definetly use a package manager to fetch these. But really, it takes a few minutes to compile and install. Toss both file into /usr/local/icecast - those files being the icecast binary and icecast.xml config file.
Icecast2, even though its development/unstable, is far more stable than Icecast1 which has been abandoned for years. Removing any existing "Icecast" package (which is going to be 1.x) and tossing in a Icecast2 is by far worth it.. it should be backwards compatable with whatever setup you currently have, but also is faster, uses less memory, breaks streams far less often (better stream timing), and supports Ogg Vorbis.
Anyways, I don't think there is a debian package for Icecast2, and even if there is, it's likely out of date like most debian packages tend to be. Being as its fast to compile and a really small, simple package, nor does anything depend on it, not really a reason not to compile and install manually. I can help if anyone has any problems.
